How helical gearboxes work:

In a helical gearbox, the helical teeth of the driving helical gear gradually mesh with the helical teeth of the driven helical gear. As the gears rotate, the contact between the teeth starts at one end of the tooth and expands smoothly across the entire tooth surface. This progressive engagement is the key to their performance.

Helical gearboxes can be configured to transmit power between parallel shafts, or between non-parallel shafts in special arrangements (such as cross-axis helical gears, although not as common as right-angle bevel gears in general-purpose gearboxes).
