Leaf springs are a simple spring form commonly used for wheeled vehicles' suspension. Originally referred to as laminated springs or frame springs, sometimes referred to as semi-elliptical springs, elliptical springs, or cart springs, it is one of the oldest forms of vehicle suspension. A leaf spring is one or more narrow curved thin plates connected to the axle and chassis, which allow the leaf spring to bend vertically in response to the irregularity of the road surface. Horizontal leaf springs are the most commonly used arrangement, extending along the length of the vehicle and installed perpendicular to the wheel axle, but there are also many examples of horizontal leaf springs.
