A Sugar Mill Chain is a series of cane rollers designed to be used in a sugar mill for the extraction of sugar from cane juice. This application requires chains that are able to withstand the harshest conditions and Tsubaki has developed a range of chains that are suitable for this use. The unique outboard roller design also means there is no need to dismantle the entire system if a chain breaks, meaning less downtime and lower costs.
The process of producing raw or white sugar involves several stages, the first being juice clarification. This is done by removing the water from the cane juice and concentrating the sugar content. The next stage is to pump the juice through a series of rollers that squeeze the juice out of the cane. This process can be carried out in one or more machines, typically in a train of three to six mills.
This cane juice is then passed through a solicitation step in which the sugar content of the juice is reduced through a chemical reaction to remove any coloring agents. The resulting product is often known as plantation white sugar. The final step is to remove the remaining sulfur from the sugar using a process called crystallization.
The sugar cane plantation industry has an important role in providing jobs and economic benefits to local people. However, the sector has to be careful not to damage the environment and should look for alternative ways of achieving its sustainability goals.
It is therefore important to identify how the cane processing chain operates and to understand the impact of its processes on the environment. Having an understanding of the environmental impact of each stage is crucial to improving overall production efficiency.
When it comes to reducing the impacts of sugarcane production on the environment, it is necessary to look at different technologies. This includes the use of renewable energy sources, waste reduction and recycling, and new agribusiness models such as circular economy, among others.
In addition, it is important to consider the social aspect of the cane production process and how it affects the livelihoods of growers and their families. This is particularly important in countries such as South Africa where there are large numbers of small-scale farmers, which are the basis of the country's economy.
A number of studies have focused on the socioeconomic implications of the sugar cane plantation industry, including a survey of small-scale growers in KwaZulu-Natal. These findings reveal that, as a result of regulatory restructuring in the late 1980s and early 1990s, small-scale growers were increasingly exposed to destabilizing financial risks from the emergence of small-scale millers.
The paper investigates these structural changes and their effect on the dynamics of social reproduction and accumulation in two rural wards of the Umfolozi region. Specifically, the study focuses on how these shifts have affected small-scale growers' terms of exchange and their ability to expand landholding.
The research finds that the growth of small-scale growers was primarily driven by industry subsidies disguised as micro-credit initiatives. These measures encouraged Bantustan land to be incorporated into the cane production system with strong miller oversight. Once these subsidies were eliminated, the relationship between SSGs and millers changed significantly. SSGs were now subject to destabilizing and in some cases illegal practices.
