How do I know what wheels my trailer needs?
The first specification to be determined is the number of studs/bolts and the diameter of the "bolt circle". Most 4-ear wheels have 4 "bolt rings, while most 5-ear ship trailer wheels have 4 ½" Bolt ring diameter. Freight and multi-purpose trailers with 5-lug wheels typically have 5 "bolt rings. To accurately measure the bolt circle of the wheel hub, please measure from the center of the wheel hub to the center of the bolt and multiply the estimated value by 2. How do I know what wheels my trailer needs?
The second specification to be determined is the size of the inner and outer bearings. Most bearings are printed with reference numbers, which can be used to quickly identify their inner diameter (refer to the chart in the wheel bearing section).
If there are no available numbers, the most accurate method for measuring the inner diameter of bearings is to use a micrometer. Before ordering, be sure to check the measured values of the inner and outer bearings. The hub length or bearing distance should also be considered. Some trailer manufacturers, such as LoadRite, use "short wheels" on their 1 "and 1-1/16" straight axles. Therefore, the overall wheel hub length is shorter than most other standard ship trailer wheels.
When using a new bearing kit to rebuild the hub body, remember to replace the inner and outer race or outer race. Even if the outer ring shows no signs of wear, it should be returned to maintain appropriate bearing tolerances. Thoroughly lubricate the bearings by applying grease around the rollers, and then fill the inside of the hub before installing a new grease seal on the back of the hub.
The quality and compatibility of bearing grease are another important consideration, especially for marine trailers that are usually submerged in water after long-distance road transportation. Marine trailer-bearing grease has excellent water erosion performance and excellent saltwater corrosion resistance. It is important to determine compatibility before mixing different types of lubricants. Incompatible lubricating grease may cause adverse chemical reactions, leading to rust, pitting, and metal scratches and reducing the lubricating ability of the grease. The following table shows the compatibility characteristics of various grease types.
